I made my first steps as a volleyball player at the age of 14, when we played volleyball in our physical education classes at school. After some initial difficulties - at my first participation in a nation-wide school competition my teacher decided to not even let me play for one rally - I decided that it should not go on like that any further. As a consequence, I went to volleyball practice at least three times per week, aside from soccer practice, of course. Later on, this intensive training paid off, though, when I played my first official matches for the TSV Bederkesa men's volleyball team at the age of 17. Eventually, I started liking volleyball that much that I quit playing soccer when I was 19. After having played volleyball on a coed team during the time of my community service, I started studying in Oldenburg in October 1992. At that time, a new team was easily found in Bad Zwischenahn, a smaller city close to Oldenburg. After having played for two years in Bad Zwischenahn and for two more years on TuS Ofen's men's team, I made a great leap forward when I finally started playing for the Oldenburger TB club in the so-called "Regionalliga" (third German division) in 1997. The following season 1997/1998, which ended with the division's championship and the advancement to the second German volleyball division, surely was the greatest success in my career as a volleyball player. After two hard and time-consuming years in the second division, I decided to take a break from volleyball - my stay abroad in Canada just came at the right point in time. After my return to Germany in June 2001, I started playing on my old team at the Oldenburger TB club again, but aside from indoor volleyball also beach volleyball became more and more important for me. Since that time I regularly take part in beach volleyball tournaments in the northwestern part of Germany. When it's too cold for beach volleyball in the wintertime, me and my indoor team-mates play indoor volleyball, sometimes more sometimes less successful, as you can see from the overview below. |
