I made my first experiences as a volleyball coach in grade 12 at school, when I was in charge of the school's volleyball afternoon project, which was very popular among the students. Since no teacher had been able to take care of the project and many students did not want to do without the thursday afternoon volleyball activities, the head of the school shortly gave me - a reliable student ;-) - all responsibilities regarding this project. After my secondary/grammar school diploma, I became the coach of the coed team I played on during the time of my community service and I made my first official coach's license (class "C") at Lower-Saxony's Volleyball Association.
When I joined the men's team in Bad Zwischenahn at the beginning of my studies in Oldenburg, I also accepted to give volleyball practice for children and teenagers in this club. Together with my brother, I tried to build up a small youth volleyball section, which worked out very well: in two years time we managed to create almost three new youth teams for the VfL Bad Zwischenahn club. Unfortunately, all these efforts came to a halt a couple of years later, because of my activities as a volleyball player and because of the fact that there were simply not enough qualified volleyball coaches. During this time, I also made my second official coach's license (class "B") in another educational programme of Lower-Saxony's Volleyball Association. The hightlight of this educational programme surely was the ability to sit in on volleyball practices and matches of the first men's volleyball team of the SCC Berlin volleyball club (1st division) with their head coach Andrzej Niemczyk, who used to be the head coach of the German women's volleyball team in the 1970s.
After my stay abroad in Canada and a longer break from being a volleyball coach, I accepted to become the coach of a coed youth team in the Oldenburger TB sports club. In 2003, I started the "OTB Volley Girls" project which was my biggest youth project as a volleyball coach so far. Because of the lack of qualified coaches and enough opportunities for volleyball practice, I worked out a concept, in which two teams form a single practice group which has volleyball practice together on a single volleyball court. Over the course of several years, this concept has proven its value especially in the Oldenburger TB's youth section: during the 2003/2004 season, both teams of which I was the coach played very successful and advanced to the next division, which was up to now my greatest success as a volleyball coach.
